Taking pictures for your Proligner clear aligner cases

There is a lot of top end equipment in a dental clinic, from the chair, drills, and to the x-ray. It's programmed to assume more complex equipment is, the better. This article will help you rethink what it takes to take quality pictures for clear aligners. To take great pictures you do not require an expensive DSLR camera, a fancy ring light, and all the bells and whistles.

Simple and Smart

Technology is moving fast, from the dentist having to draw what they saw for their notes not too long ago, to now with incredibly high-quality digital images. Digital imagery technology is continuing to advance with miniaturisation and integration.

The next step forward is a simple in-clinic iPhone with no sim or apps, other than what is required for the digital workflow. One app to have installed is a photo uploader that integrates with the clinic computer to simplify the workflow. Take the photos, upload the images to the clinic computer and submit the case for treatment planning. That’s it.

Retractors

Retractors are essential for good pictures. Don't use your fingers. Have a range of retractors on hand to choose from so you get the best fit and it is easily manipulated. Having an appropriate retractor then having another team member get in close with a small, light and easily handled iPhone, that really only requires one hand to operate, will make a positive workflow change. It’s a real advantage over a bulky DSLR.

Patient Management

Another note is to be mindful of patient’s anxiety. They may not be expecting their photos to be taken with an iPhone or iPad. Have it clearly identifiable as clinic equipment. Use a clinic branded case and have a clinic branded home screen. This provides credibility and it’s simple to explain the digital workflow to the patient. Also add a ring-holder for extra security, enabling the phone to be operated with one hand safely, removing the risk of it falling on the patient’s face if they are in the chair at the time.

Security and Privacy

It is important to note that with all the benefits of workflow digitisation, the clinic must be mindful of security and privacy. iPhones and iPads should be dedicated to the clinic. They may hold or have access to patients’ information, so they should always stay in the clinic and have access restricted. Set up the phone so only team members can access it, data is encrypted, and images are automatically removed once uploaded.
